Joseph N. Bernadel (1947-) was born and educated through secondary school in Haiti and immigrated to the US in 1975. He served 22 years in the US Army, rising to the rank of major and filling sensitive positions worldwide, including in Haiti and Mozambique. In addition to a B.S. in Administration from the University of Hawaii, Mr. Bernadel has a graduate degree from University of Florida in Latin American and Caribbean Affairs. He speaks five languages.
Major Bernadel is the first person of Haitian ancestry to have opened a public school in the United States, the Toussaint L’Ouverture High School for Arts and Social Justice in Delray Beach. In October 2002, the school also launched the Haiti Museum of Arts & Culture.
