Services: Public Utilities

Florida Power and Light Company provides electric service to all parts of Palm Beach County except Lake Worth, where the city provides both water and electric service.

In 1984 FPL Group, Inc. was organized as a holding company to allow Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) to start new companies and purchase existing ones. When John J. Hudiburg became CEO of FPL in 1985, it was the fourth largest electric utility in the United States and one of the fastest growing.

Hudiburg emphasized quality control and a Japanese management style, and in 1989 FPL Group was the first non-Japanese company to receive the Deming Prize for quality control. The award was named for W. Edwards Deming, the American business consultant who helped Japanese companies modernize after World War II. Soon after, James Broadhead became CEO of FPL Group and returned the company to an American management style.

FPL Energy was formed in 1998 to manage FPL Group's interests in clean energy, such as wind, natural gas, hydro, geothermal, and solar. In 2003 FPL Group won the Edison Award, the electric industry’s highest honor, for its achievements in clean energy production, environmental excellence, customer satisfaction, and shareholder value.

Area Codes

When telephone area codes were assigned in 1947, all of Florida used 305. Palm Beach County kept 305 until 1988, when 407 was established for the area from Boca Raton to Orlando. Phone numbers were quickly used up for the increasing abundance of cell phones, fax machines, and computer modems; in 1996 Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties received area code 561. In 2001, when the Treasure Coast split off as area code 772, authorities predicted that Palm Beach County would run out of 561 phone numbers by 2008.
